Sew Vintage: Gifts to Sell at Fairs and Bazaars

This week's Sew Vintage is from the American Thread Company. It is Star Gift Book No. 129, entitled, "Gifts to Sell at Fairs and Bazaars." It originally sold for 10 cents in 1956.

Some of the crafts in this book absolutely crack me up! I cannot imagine seeing them at a craft fair these days, but I bet there are some folks still making them. :)

(Forgive me for not retaking these pictures where the glare from the flash isn't right in the middle of the images! Lazy!)

Cover

This picture was titled, "Like Mother, Like Daughter." hahah :) A mother and daughter octopus pair. Ummm... okay?.

Everyone's grandmother had at least one of these items.

The easy dust mop and the knitted potholder.

The Shoe Favor! :) GOTTA HAVE IT!!!

Cock-A-Doodle Doo Napkin Holder

Cock-A-Doodle-Doo Toaster Cover

Doggy Pillow. hahaha

Rose Bathroom Fixtures

And finally, the mesh luncheon set.

What do you think? Would I make a killing at a craft fair?!?!? :)

Crochet Granny Square Bag Tutorial - Part I

I'm following through on one of my Honey Do posts! Yay!

I figured I'd share it with you, if you'd like to follow along.

Materials
 - E hook
 - Lots of different colors of yarn!

You can use any granny square pattern you like. This blog, "A Granny A Day," has all sorts of fun patterns!

I used a traditional, circle in the square pattern. Here's how it's done.

With first color, ch 5. Sl st in 1st ch to form a loop.
Round 1.  Ch 3. *Dc in ring, ch 1. Repeat from * around 11 more times. Join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. Weave in ends.
Round 2.  With second color, in any ch 1 sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, ch 1. In each sp around, do 2 dc followed by 1 ch. Join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. Weave in ends.
Round 3.  With third color, in any ch 1 sp, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp, ch 1. In each sp around, do 3 dc followed by 1 ch. Join with a sl st in top of beginning ch. Weave in ends.
Round 4. With fourth color (which I used as a main color in my granny squares) in any ch 1 sp, ch 3, dc in same sp, ch 2, 2 dc. In next 2 spaces, 2 dc, 1 ch, 2 dc. *In fourth space (which will be the next corner), 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. In next 2 spaces, 2 dc, 1 ch, 2 dc. Repeat from * around.

Make 19 squares.

Next up, crochet the straps for your bag. Using an H hook, ch 82. Turn. Sk 2. Hdc 80. Turn. Ch 2, Hdc 80. Weave in ends. Make two of these straps.

Next week, I will assemble the squares and sew a lining for the bag! :)

Kids Craft: Fun with Airplanes!

This week, we've been learning about airplanes. Today, we did a couple of crafty activities with that theme in mind. They were both super simple, but plenty of fun for the little one!

First, the craft stick airplane picture...

I gave him a piece of blue craft foam and a white piece of chalk to draw clouds in the sky.

We then glued this "plane" in the sky and set it aside to dry.

Once it was dry, he colored his plane and of course wanted to add some glitter. That's all!

Just plain old artsy fun!

Our second activity was making and using some homemade math manipulatives.

I printed out a couple of simple airplane shapes, and then cut them out.

We used them as a template to trace planes on to scraps of felt, and then cut out the airplanes.

This is how we dance when we cut.

We made 10 planes in all, but obviously you can do whatever you like. I'm not the boss of you.

I then made THIS simple worksheet. My little man LOVES worksheets. They make him feel really grown, so a couple times a week, I acquiesce. ;)

He's sounding out the word "how."

The worksheet asks questions like:
How many RED planes are there?
How many WHITE planes are there?
How many RED + WHITE planes are there?
How many planes are there in ALL?

So, he was able to practice reading, color recognition and sorting, counting, simple addition, and writing numbers.

And he got them all right! His 3s are always backward, and I love that the first answer was 2, but he wrote "TOO."

Hope you have fun with airplanes 2! (or too, whatever you prefer)

Sew Vintage: How to Make Valances

This week's Sew Vintage is another classic from the Singer Sewing Library. It originally sold for $0.25 in 1960. I LOVE the pictures in this little book because they are SOOOOO dated; however, I'm quite sure that one of the neighbors across the street has window dressings straight off the pages of this book.... and probably original to 1960.

(The curtains pictured above are TOOOOTTALLY in the neighbor's house.)

Anyway, it's definitely a useful little guide, chock full of very useful information!

Honey Do: Pettiskirts

I would really LOVE to sit down a make a pettiskirt one day. I don't know if I have the time or patience... and I know it requires hundreds and hundreds of yards of tulle.... but they are SO cute!
